All About Parking Lot Lighting

When you are walking about at night, or parking your car to shop in the evening, one of the last things you may think about is parking lot lighting. If you don’t have to think about it, that means the lighting around you is adequate. If it is not, you will soon find yourself feeling vulnerable. In areas where parking lot lighting is low and infrequent, there tends to be more crime. When you can’t see what you are doing or where you are going, you also can’t see if someone is waiting to take advantage of you, or to hurt you.

Parking lot lighting should be bright, adequate, and placed all over a car park. If you find yourself faced with parking lot lighting that seems to be dim or non existent, you should move on and go somewhere else. Criminals are well aware of the advantage of a darkened parking lot, and this is where they tend to lurk. If you have parked somewhere during the daylight hours, but come out to a dark parking area, you should go back inside and find an escort to your car. Even if you don’t get a lot of business at night, people may still use your lot at night to visit other places. People may automatically choose you just because there is great parking lot lighting. They may not even realize it, but they get a feeling of security from a well-lit lot.  Walk around your lot at night and make sure that all corners are well lit.

If you have a large driveway, and get a lot of company, you want to light your driveway for the safety of your friends and family. Parking lot lighting is not just for large car parks at malls and downtown areas. There can be strange people lingering around your neighborhood. The best way to keep these types of people away from your home and the people you care about is to make sure all outdoor areas are well lit. Even in a small town, this is a huge worry. I remember in my teen years a few women who had broken out of prison came along and stole a car out of my neighbor’s driveway. The town I was in at the time was home to less than fifty families. It can happen anywhere.
