For someone with little knowledge of exactly how their vehicle works, seeing the check engine light come on can create a sense of panic. The important thing to remember is that it’s simply a warning sign that something is amiss in the vehicle and needs to be looked at. For the adventurous wannabe mechanic, they can take on the task themselves. For most individuals, though seeking professional help is a good idea.

Computers are responsible for running many things including most late model vehicles. When the computer senses there is a problem it turns on the check engine light. The light is mainly there to notify the driver that they should be checking into the problem. However, without the proper tool and knowledge, it’s virtually impossible for anyone to determine what the underlying issue is.

Most vehicles will store a code that needs to be read once the light has been lit. This is done by a mechanic with a special tool. Although anyone can purchase one of these tools that helps them read the codes shown after the check engine light comes on, unless they know what the code means, there’s little they can do to fix the problem.

If you’ve ever taken your vehicle to a professional to be fixed you may have noticed them hooking it up to a large monitor. This is actually a very detailed and precise code reader. If you explain that the check engine light on your car has come on, they’ll often use this machine to diagnosis the problem. Many auto repair shops will charge a nominal fee for diagnosis which is great as it allows the customer the chance to decide whether or not they want to move forward with the related repair.

Another reason you really do need to have someone with engine knowledge look at the vehicle is that unless the check engine light is cleared it will continue to come on. Some people think that if their car or truck is running smoothly, they can simply ignore the light and it will go away. Unfortunately, it won’t. An auto mechanic can clear the codes which will allow the check engine light to go out.

Cars and trucks are an investment and with anything that we put money into, repairs and maintenance are almost always necessary. The important thing to remember is that just because the check engine light comes on, it doesn’t automatically mean a thousand dollar repair bill. It may be something minor that will take just a few hours and a few dollars to repair. Ignoring the check engine light however, can result in more damage and higher costs.
